This Sunday is your final chance to catch The Percivals 2022.
The Percivals 2022 features 203 painted and photographic portraits by 167 local and international artists.
Townsville-based photographer and first-time entrant Martin Hodgson is a Finalist for his portrait of local theatre stalwart Alan Cooke.
Martin said he snapped the Alan’s portrait during rehearsals for a play he was directing in 2021.
“I’ve been taking photos for Townsville Little Theatre for a few years and it’s great fun,” said Martin.
“You get some really good expressions and some good images when you do that job.
“The portrait I entered is of Alan Cooke who was directing The Opposite Sex at the time, and it’s just a good shot of Alan in action.”

A Photo-A-Day is Martin’s Way
Martin said a photo-a-day challenge on Instagram last year encouraged him to spend more time taking photos. His Percivals entry was originally shared during that time.
“Every day I would take photos and put up my favourite,” Martin said.
“Quite a few people responded to Alan’s portrait. My daughter Lara suggested I should enter it in the Percivals.
“Some of the other images I posted throughout the challenge aren’t the best, but there are quite a lot of images I’m quite pleased with in there.
“I’ve been taking photographs since I was a kid, but when you give yourself a daily task like that and make yourself go out and take photographs, you do learn better technique, better composition and you sort of walk around all day looking for a good photograph. That’s quite a nice thing to do.”
Martin said he was humbled to be named a Finalist in The Percivals 2022.
“To be chosen as one of the Finalists made me realise what a privilege it was because there are some great artists and photographers out there.”
The Percivals 2022 are on at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery until 3 July 2022.
