Winter. It’s the season where, anywhere South of Brisbane, people are rugged up indoors, cancelling all plans, to avoid the outside chill. But in North Queensland, we come alive: sunsets are beautiful, the ocean is smooth as glass, and the sky is clearer than ever – making it the perfect time of year to dance under the stars.

The Starlight Move Haus – with its clear roof and spacious dance floor – will host a plethora of local dance groups throughout NAFA; serving up every style imaginable from bush dance and ballroom to Zumba and contemporary.

A troupe from the Burdekin’s KHDance will be travelling up to perform as part of the Move Haus program, in what choreographer Jake Healy said would be an incredible opportunity for the group.

“We saw expressions of interest for Starlight Move Haus advertised on Facebook, and thought it was an amazing experience for the kids and a great chance for us to perform in Townsville,” said Jake.

“We will be having 40 minutes of performance and 20 minutes of interactive get up and try time as part of our Move Haus show.”

July’s performance will form part of KHDance’s 40-year celebrations.

“My mother Karen Healy started KHDance in 1979 in Home Hill and has continued teaching in the same town for 40 years. There wasn’t a lot of opportunity for people in the Burdekin to dance prior to this – the original and only school was shutting down, so Karen decided to step up and take over as teacher to ensure children still had somewhere to dance.

“We have grown enormously! From a small school of 15 to a school of 140 this year. This is a massive size for a small town and we are so lucky to have the most amazing parents and students!

“We have a number of local shows we do each year including the Burdekin Water Festival which is a major performance for us. We’ll then be hosting a massive concert and 40th anniversary celebration this November.”

Catch KHDance performing in the Starlight Move Haus from 4pm on Saturday 29 July. The Starlight Move Haus will be open from 19-21 and 25-28 July with a full program available here – all Move Haus shows are free.
